Parents Prevent Him from Forbidding Evil

Question:

Assalamualikum wa rahmatullahi wabarkaatuhWhen we go to someones house they start to mix between the genders and my parents do not allow me to forbid the evil nor can I leave. SO I have stopped going to people’s houses with them when i know that most likely mixing (regardless of whether they mix for short time or long). What do you say?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

The mixing that involves (men and women) touching each other, women not wearing their Hijaab, and the like, is forbidden and it is a great evil that leads to great corruption. It is a matter that is not permissible to approve of in any way. Rather, it is obligatory to forbid the doer with wisdom and good exhortation. If people adhere and refrain from it, then this is the objective, otherwise it is not permissible to go to a place where there is such forbidden mixing except with the intention of forbidding it. Allah Says (what means): {And when you see those who engage in [offensive] discourse concerning Our verses, then turn away from them until they enter into another conversation. And if Satan should cause you to forget, then do not remain after the reminder with the wrongdoing people.} [Quran 6:68]

Ibn Al-‘Arabi, may Allaah have mercy upon him, said: “This (verse) is evidence that it is not permissible to sit with the people who commit grave major sins.” [End of quote]

Ibn Khuwayzmindaad said: “The one who engages in offensive discourse concerning the verses of Allah, must be deserted and one should not sit with him, whether he was a believer or a disbeliever.” [End of quote]

Moreover, Jaabir, may Allaah be pleased with him, narrated that the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said: “Whoever believes in Allah and in the Last Day should not sit at a table at which intoxicants are served.” [At-Tirmithi]

So you did well by staying away from such meetings, especially that you mentioned that your parents neither allow you to forbid evil nor to leave; may Allah reward you.

Allah knows best.
