Ibrahim, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, brought Ismail’s mother and her son Ismail while she was breastfeeding him, until he placed them at the house, at a doha above Zamzam at the top of the mosque, and there was no one in Mecca at that time, and it had no water, so he placed them there…”
On the authority of Ibn Abbas, may God be pleased with them both, he said:
Ibrahim, may God bless him and grant him peace, brought Ismail’s mother and her son Ismail while she was breastfeeding him, until he placed them at the house, at a pond above Zamzam at the top of the mosque, and there was no one in Mecca at that time, and there was no water in it. So he placed them there, and placed with them a jug of dates and a waterskin in which there was water. Then Ibrahim stood up and went, and Ismail’s mother followed him and said: O Ibrahim, where are you going and leaving us in this valley in which there is no man or woman? Something? She told him that repeatedly, but he did not pay attention to her. She said to him: Did God command you to do this? He said: Yes. She said: Then he will not waste us. Then I returned, and Ibrahim, may God bless him and grant him peace, set off until when he was at the place where they could not see him, he faced the House, then he made these supplications, then he raised his hands and said: {My Lord, I have settled some of my descendants in a valley devoid of crops}until he reached {They thank you} [إبراهيم: 37].
Ismail’s mother started breastfeeding Ishmael and drinking from that water, until when the waterskin ran out, she became thirsty, and her son became thirsty, and she started looking at him writhing – or he said, writhing – so she set off, unwilling to look at him, and found Al-Safa the closest mountain on earth next to her, so she stood on it, then faced the valley, looking, did she see anyone? She didn’t see anyone.
So she descended from Al-Safa until she reached the valley. She raised the edge of her shield, then she ran as hard as a human might until she crossed the valley. Then she came to Al-Marwah and stood on it. She looked. Did she see anyone? She did not see anyone, so she did that seven times. Ibn Abbas, may God be pleased with them, said: The Prophet, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, said: “Therefore, the people ran between them.” When she approached Al-Marwah, she heard a voice and said: “Shh” – meaning herself – and then she listened, so she also heard, and said: “I have listened, if you have Ghawath.” Then, behold, she was with the angel at the place of Zamzam, so he searched with his heel – or he said with his wing – until the water appeared, so she made She was giving him a bath and saying this with her hand, and she started scooping some of the water into her watering can and it bubbled up after she scooped.
And in a narration: As much as you scoop. Ibn Abbas, may God be pleased with them, said: The Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, said: “May God have mercy on Ismail’s mother if she left Zamzam. Or he said, if you had not scooped water– Zamzam would have been a springHe said: So she drank and breastfed her child, and the king said to her: Do not be afraid of the wasteland, for here is a house for God that this boy and his father are building, and God does not waste its people.
Ishmael’s mother died, so Abraham came after he had married Ishmael. When he saw him, he rose to him, and they did as a father does to a child and a child does to a father. He said: O Ismail, God has commanded me to do something. He said: So do what your Lord commanded you? He said: And you will help me. He said: And I will help you. He said: God commanded me to build a house here, and he pointed to a hill that was high around it. Then he raised the foundations of the house, and Ishmael started bringing stones and Abraham built until when the building was raised, he brought this stone and placed it for him, so he stood on it, and he was building, and Ishmael handed him the stones, and they said: {Our Lord, accept from us, for You are the Hearing, the All-Knowing} [البقرة: 127].
