The morals of those who fast
• Praise be to God, and may blessings and peace be upon the Messenger of God, and I bear witness that there is no god but God alone with no partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger, And after:
• One of the greatest characteristics and virtues of the month of Ramadan is that it is an opportunity for the morals of those who are fasting to change for the better, behaviors to change, and actions to improve. The Prophet, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, laid down for us principles and rules for the morals of those who fast, and drew a road map for what a fasting person should be like when fasting: having good morals and abandoning reprehensible morals. In the two Sahih books, on the authority of Abu Hurairah, may God be pleased with him, he said: The Messenger of God, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, said: ((And if it is a day for one of you to fast, he should not be obscene or make noise. If anyone insults him or fights him; Let him say: I am a fasting person.) And in a narration: ((And if someone fights him or insults him, let him say: I am fasting twice)).
• In this hadith: An explanation of what the morals of a fasting person should be: that he abstains from idle talk and obscene speech, and abstains from forbidden things and desires that negatively affect his morals and actions.
These are the morals that a fasting person should have:
The first oneThe fasting person has a calm soul and only what pleases his Lord, Glory be to Him, comes out of him. He, peace and blessings of God be upon him, said: ((The believer is not one who slanders, curses, or is obscene or obscene)).
The second one: He is not obscene; That is, he says obscene words, and it is also applied to intercourse and its introductions.
The third one: He is not noisy.
Fourth: He is not ignorant; That is, he does not do any of the actions of ignorant people. Such as shouting, foolishness, and the like.
The fifth: If he is harmed or assaulted, he does not respond in kind; Rather, he says: ((I am fasting, I am fasting)); Al-San’ani, may God have mercy on him, said: “Do not insult a beginner or a responsive person.”
• Al-Bukhari, may God have mercy on him, included in his Sahih: Chapter: [هل يقول إِنِّي صَائِمٌ إذا شُتِم؟].
• The scholars said: “It does not harm the fasting person if people know that he is fasting without showing it.”
• Some of them said: “If it is during Ramadan, he speaks with his tongue, and if it is at other times, he speaks within himself.”
• Ibn Hajar, may God have mercy on him, said: “The secret of repeating a word twice is that he says it once with his heart and once with his tongue. If he says it with his heart, his tongue refrains from harming his opponent, and if he says it with his tongue, he refrains himself from harming his opponent.”
• Fasting is one of the best deeds. God Almighty prescribed it to refine souls, purify them, and accustom them to goodness. Thus, the fasting person will improve his morals and refine his behavior.
• This is the practical application of the morals of the fasting person: if he is harmed or assaulted, he does not respond in kind; Rather, he says: ((I am fasting, I am fasting)); He enjoys many good tidings; From her:
1- It is the highest level of good morals and the combination of all goodness. How many evils and harms can be prevented by good behavior?
2- It is the highest degree of charity. Because he suppresses his anger, which the Lord Almighty has praised; As God Almighty said: And those who restrain anger and pardon people, and God loves those who do good. ﴾ [آل عمران: 134]And on the authority of Ibn Omar, may God be pleased with them both, that the Prophet, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, said: ((There is no dose greater in reward with God than the dose of anger suppressed by a servant seeking the face of God)); [رواه أحمد، وابن ماجه].
3- It is a closing of the door to quarreling, hostility, hatred and estrangement.
4- It means not responding to abuse with abuse. Rather, it is met with the morals of those who fast. As God Almighty said: Good and evil are not equal. Repel with what is best, and then the one between whom and you there is enmity is as if he were a close friend. ﴾ [فصلت: 34].
5- It contains pardon, pardon, benevolence, and turning away from the ignorant. As God Almighty said: Be forgiving, enjoin custom, and turn away from the ignorant. ﴾ [الأعراف: 199]And God Almighty said: And if you pardon and pardon and forgive, then surely God is Forgiving and Merciful. ﴾ [التغابن: 14]And God Almighty said: And whoever is patient and forgives, this is for those who resolve matters. ﴾ [الشورى: 43].
6- It is to protect the fast from its spoilers. Such as raising one’s voice, being loud, cursing, and cursing; As in the hadith: ((And if it is a day for one of you to fast, he should not be obscene, nor be noisy)), and in the hadith: ((Whoever does not give up false speech and acting upon it, God has no need for him to give up his food and drink)).
7- It contains: education in good manners; The fasting person will receive a heavy weight on his scales on the Day of Resurrection. As in the hadith: ((There is nothing heavier on the scales than good character, and the person with good character will attain the level of the person who fasts and prays)); [رواه الترمذي عن أبي الدرداء رضي الله عنه، وصحَّحه الألباني]His ranks will rise, and he will be the closest person to the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, on the Day of Resurrection. As in the hadith: ((Indeed, the one who is dearest to me and the closest to me in assembly on the Day of Resurrection will be the one who has the best morals among you)); [رواه الترمذي].
8- It closes the door to debate and dissent. He receives this good news; As in the hadith: ((I guarantee a house in the outskirts of Paradise: for whoever abandons quarrels, even if he is right)).
9- It has the highest levels of strength; According to the text of the words of the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace: ((The strong man is not the one who strikes, but the strong man is the one who controls himself when angry)); [متفق عليه]Ibn al-Qayyim, may God have mercy on him, said: “That is, the one who controls himself when angry is more worthy of being called severe than the one who strikes men.”
10- It contains all morals; Namely: (forbearance), which is truly the master of morals; Its meaning: [حبس النفس والتحكم فيها عند الغضب].
We ask God Almighty to grant us a dream, improve our morals, and guide us to the best of them.
