Rulings of the month of Safar and what is new in it
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to God, and may blessings and peace be upon the Messenger of God, our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family, companions, and those who follow him.As for what follows:
These are some of the rulings related to the month of Safar:
First:It is not permissible to be pessimistic about the month of Safar or any other month, as the people of pre-Islamic times used to be pessimistic about it, and they used to call it “the month of the past.” That is: the month of doom and destruction, and when this month came upon them, they would close their homes and say: “No marriage in Safar, no travel in Safar, and no trade in Safar.” And because of the intensity of their reverence for the month of Safar, they would delay the sanctity of “God’s forbidden month” until “Safar” in order to fight in it; Because they think that the month of Safar does not bring victory or spoils. This is “Al-Nasi’” about whom God said:Nasi is only an increase in disbelief, thereby leading astray those who disbelieve.﴾ [Al-Tawbah: 37], and the Prophet, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, said: “There is no infection, no infection, no infection, no infection”; agreed.
It is not permissible to be pessimistic about marriage, travel, or work during the month of Safar, or to abstain from work and engage in personal matters during it, or to hold celebrations and distribute food and sweets after its end out of pessimism about it. All of it is a kind of sin that is forbidden.
Second:It was called zero; Because of the yellowing of its people in Mecca when they travel, and it was said: The month was called zero; Because they used to raid the tribes, leaving behind zero belongings from those they found, and that was zero after Muharram. [See: Taj Al-Arous (3067/1) with a simple edit].
Third: This month is not specific to a specific remembrance, nor to a specific supplication, as someone specializes in this month with the seven verses of peace; As God Almighty says:Peace be upon Noah in the worlds(Al-Saffat: 79), and his saying:Peace, a word from a merciful Lord([Yasin: 58], and his saying:)Peace be upon Moses and Aaron(Al-Saffat: 120), then these leaves are placed in vessels and they drink their water, believing that this action removes the evils and calamities that befall in the month of Safar. They claim that whoever wants to be saved from the evils of that day must pray four rak’ahs to God Almighty in a specific manner, then conclude his prayer with a specific supplication, including: “O God, protect me from the evil of this day and what descends on it, O Sufficient One.” And this is undoubtedly a corrupt and false belief, and it has no basis in the Book of God Almighty nor in the Sunnah of His Messenger, may God bless him and grant him peace. Rather, it is reprehensible pessimism and an ugly innovation that every rational person must reject, and all of this is among the matters that have not been proven in our religion and have no basis, and this is what the Permanent Committee for Scholarly Research and Fatwa issued a fatwa on; As the fatwa stated: “We do not know of a basis for this voluntary prayer mentioned in the Qur’an or the Sunnah, and it has not been proven to us that any of the predecessors of this nation and the righteous people behind it performed this voluntary prayer. Rather, it is a reprehensible innovation. It has been proven from the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, that he said: “Whoever does an action that is not according to our command will have it rejected.” Narrated by Muslim (3243), and in a narration: “Whoever innovates in This matter of ours, whatever is not part of it will be rejected.” Narrated by Al-Bukhari (2499) and Muslim (188).
Whoever attributes this prayer and what was mentioned with it to the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, or to one of the Companions, may God be pleased with them, has committed the greatest slander, and he will be punished by God as he deserves in terms of punishment for liars, and with God is success.”
Fourth:The month of Safar, like other months, is neither a good nor an evil month. This is why some of the predecessors denounced the one who, if he hears an owl hooting, says: Good, God willing, so it is not said: good or evil, but rather it croaks like other birds.
Fifth: One of the indications that pessimism in the month of Safar is invalid is the occurrence of great events and conquests in it, including:
•The marriage of the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, to Khadija, may God be pleased with her. This was in the month of Safar, fifteen years before the mission.
•The Battle of Al-Abwa (Waddan): It was the first battle that the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, invaded personally, and it was in the month of Safar in the second year of the Hijra.
•The heroes of Islam converted to Islam: The month of Safar in the eighth year of the Hijra witnessed the conversion of Khalid bin Al-Walid, Amr bin Al-Aas, and Othman bin Talha, may God be pleased with them.
•Conquest of Khaybar: It took place in the month of Safar in the seventh year of the Hijra.
•The Prophet’s Migration: The Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, was given permission to migrate and began his blessed journey in the month of Safar.
Sixth:The last Wednesday of the month of Safar is like the rest of the days. It is not permissible to single it out for prayer, fasting, supplication, or dhikr. Among the heresies spread in the month of Safar is the belief that on the last Wednesday of the month of Safar, God Almighty sends down thousands of calamities and disasters, so that that day is the most difficult and most severe day of the year. Whoever wants to be saved from the evils of that day must pray to God Almighty four rak’ahs in a specific manner, then conclude his prayer with a specific supplication, including: “O God, protect me.” The evil of this day, and what descends on it, O Sufficient One of Tasks, O One Who Defends Calamities,” and all of this is among the innovations for which God has sent down no authority.
7–Believing in goodness, victory, success, and victory in the month of Safar is the result of contrasting innovation with innovation. This belief comes under the heading of “healing innovation with innovation” and ignorance for ignorance, as the month of Safar is not a month of bad luck and bad luck (as the pre-Islamic era believed), and it is not a month of goodness and blessing in itself. Giving the name “Safar the Good,” or believing that it is attributed to luck, victory, and success, is an attempt to contradict the pre-Islamic pessimism about the month of Safar, and it is an act that has no basis in Sharia law and is considered a violation of a false belief. All time is a circumstance for the actions of human beings that occur within it, and days carry neither good nor evil in themselves.
8–Every hadith mentions events that will occur in the future on a specific date, in the month of Safar or any other month. It is a false hadith from the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace. The hadiths that specify the occurrence of temptations or future events on specific dates (such as the month of Safar or other months) are false hadiths and have no basis from the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace. This is for several reasons:
1-It contradicts the doctrine: The absolute knowledge of the unseen (including determining the dates of future events) is known only to God alone. The Almighty said:Say: No one in the heavens and earth knows the unseen except Allah.(An-Naml: 65).
2-Among the most famous false hadiths in this regard are: “Whoever gives me good news of the emergence of Safar, I will give him good news of Paradise,” and the hadith: “There will be death in Safar, then the tribes will quarrel in the spring, and then all the strangeness will happen between Jumada and Rajab…” The scholars of al-Jarh and al-Ta’deel, such as Ibn al-Jawzi, al-Shawkani, and al-Albani, have stated that these hadiths are fabricated and false.
3-Nullifying pessimism: Months and days do not carry in themselves any bad omen, bad luck, or influence on fate. The Prophet, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, abolished the habit of pessimism regarding the month of Safar, which was widespread in pre-Islamic times, as in the two Sahihs, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, saying: “There is no infection, no bird, no mite, and no zero.”
Oh God, make us understand your religion, and make us followers of the Sunnah of your Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace.
By God, success, and may God’s blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and all his companions.
